Appreciation - Sr Catherine Buhagiar FMM

Nancy Serg writes:

I came across some old photos 10 years ago and wondered what had happened to my friend Sr Catherine Buhagiar FMM. We met in 1975 when she was a committee member of the Maltese Australian Women's Association NSW.

The 1975 committee consisted of Josephine Zammit, president, Sr Mary Ann Grima FMM and Sr Catherine, as social workers and treasurers, and myself as secretary. The committee meetings were held at my home in Kings Langley as I had three small babies and could not travel.

I finally found Sr Catherine at the Our Lady of Consolation Convent, in Rooty Hill.

Sr Catherine was so very happy to see me again in 1995. Afterwards, she kept contact with me and always asked about my family by name and was interested in how they were doing etc... Over the years we had some lovely lunches together when I visited her with my mother, my children and my grandchildren at the convent. She reminisced about her beloved Maltese community and the people she assisted as a missionary nun here and overseas, asking about various members of the MAWA, whom she remembered.

Eventually, Sr Catherine agreed for me to interview her and subsequently part of that interview was broadcast on SBS Maltese Radio Programme in August 1996. She had entrusted me with publishing her story in the Maltese Herald once she departs this life! I will now honour that promise, writing in English so our young people can have an insight into a migrant missionary nun's life...

After receiving a phone call from the convent, it was with some trepidation that Felix and I arrived at Blacktown Hospital just as Sr Catherine had departed this life to join our Saviour, surrounded by Sr Madonna Purcell FMM, Sr Bernadette FMM and, later, Sr Judy Dynan FMM, Provincial of the Order. I told these lovely nuns I will keep my promise to our beloved Catherine. All she wanted was for people to pray for her.
