Migrant charged with trying to strangle soldier

A Sudanese irregular immigrant was yesterday charged with trying to strangle a soldier at the Hal Far detention centre on Tuesday.

Ahmed Satar, 26, pleaded not guilty to trying to seriously injure Gunner Owen Formosa and threatening him at Lyster Barracks. He also pleaded not guilty to assaulting Gunner Formosa and his colleague Gunner Jonathan Camilleri.

Mr Satar will be detained at the Corradino Correctional Facility after Magistrate Antonio Mizzi turned down a request for bail.

Police Inspector Walter Spiteri prosecuted. Lawyer Richard Sladden represented Mr Satar.
