A 31-year-old Canadian national living in Malta died yesterday in a motorcycle accident, the police said.

Ryan Chattaway was riding in the direction of the Hemsija bypass, limits of Rabat, towards Zebbug, when he lost control of his Kawazaki Z9 and crashed into an electricity pole. He died on the spot from serious head injuries. Mr Cattaway lived in Birkirkara and held a Maltese ID card.

Parts of the motorcycle were found in fields on the other side of the road, sources told The Times. The bike itself, a high-powered machine, ended up in another field 200 metres down the road.

Magistrate Dennis Montebello is conducting an inquiry with the help of experts Jana Micallef Stafrace and Peter Aquilina.

Officers from the Rabat police station are investigating.
