Malta will be joining the rest of the world in celebrating car free day today, which has been themed Clever Commuting.
For the occasion, people are being encouraged to leave their cars at home, walk, cycle, use public transport or take a lift with friends or colleagues.
As part of the initiative, traffic wardens have been instructed to take note of the number of cars carrying three or more passengers but not exceeding the vehicle's legal carrying capacity. Those noted by the wardens will be included in a car pooling lottery.
Prizes offered by private companies - including a holiday to Euro Disney, Air Malta and Virtù Ferries tickets, weekend breaks at the Mgarr Hotel and a number of vouchers - will be awarded to 10 winning cars. Each winning car will receive five prizes.
This year no roads will be closed to traffic.
