Malta yesterday marked the 41st anniversary of its independence.

A pontifical Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta in the morning. The congregation was headed by President Eddie Fenech Adami and included Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Cabinet ministers, MPs, ambassadors and other dignitaries. Before Mass, Dr Fenech Adami inspected a guard of honour at St John's Square and was accorded the national salute.

Dr Fenech Adami and Dr Gonzi later placed flowers on the Independence Monument in Floriana.
