Our country's characteristic village cores deserve particular care and attention especially by local councils. Many local councils are doing a good job in this regard; I know for a fact that James Camilleri, an Alternattiva Demokratika councillor in Lija, is working hard to preserve the Lija village core.
Unfortunately, however, the main village square in one of the other "three villages", that of Attard, which was partially pedestrianised about eight years ago at an expense of thousands of liri, is being left to degrade and deteriorate.
The area in front of the Labour Party club cries for attention: the benches badly need repainting, light fittings which had gone missing years ago have still not been replaced, litter is left to accumulate and the fountain is broken and full of litter.
The same goes for the war monument nearby, which is in a state of disrepair. It is a shame that the good work done by Attard's first local council is in such a poor state.
There has also been talk of changing the square in front of the MLP club into a parking area. Maybe this is the reason for letting the area deteriorate. I sincerely hope the first step towards the pedestrianisation of the Attard village core is not ruined by short-sighted "projects".
