The Farsons Foundation extended its sponsorship for the Press Photography category of this year's Malta Journalism Awards, organised by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM).
Although this year more leading companies have joined as main sponsors of these national journalism awards for the first time, the Farsons Foundation was one of the organisations, which has supported this competition since it was established in 1991.
Anthony J. Tabone, a member of The Farsons Foundation's Board of Trustees, presented the sponsorship cheque to IGM chairman Malcolm J. Naudi, in the presence of IGM general secretary Joe A. Vella, and The Farsons Foundation secretary Hyacinth Muscat, at the Farsons Brewery.
This year there are three new categories, bringing the overall total of categories to 12. The new categories are Cultural Tourism, Print Journalism (Features) and the Journalist of the Year Award. The winner of the latter will be presented with an attachment with a UK-based newspaper or broadcasting station.
The press photography award, however, is one of the original awards. The Farsons Foundation has supported several initiatives launched by the IGM since it was established as The Malta Press Club in 1989. The Farsons Foundation has been associated with press photography since the early Nineties. This category attracts excellent submissions, both in terms of numbers and quality. All leading Maltese press photographers take part in this category.
Submissions for this year's award closed last month; a record 54 were submitted. This year's edition promises to be one of the most interesting and the IGM's decision to include more categories has resulted in a broader participation.
The special category in the Malta Journalism Awards is the Gold Award, sponsored by BPC, which is given to a nominated person who has excelled in journalism, and/or has contributed substantially towards the development of journalism in Malta.
