Having returned home after the Malta vs Croatia football match on September 7 and having had a chance to read different viewpoints, I have a few thoughts.
I wonder if the next time I come to Malta and if there is a ruckus somewhere nearby, and I happen to look like one of those involved, police will arrest me, take me in and force me to confess to being involved in something I didn't do by bullying the confession out of me?
Will they keep me in inhumane conditions and beat me, and will they bully me into accepting a lesser sentence for pleading guilty? And I wonder if I had evidence of mistreatment or police wrongdoing would I be beaten up again and have my possessions confiscated?
This - I know for a fact - happened in Malta to many Croatian football fans earlier this month. Who is to say it wouldn't happen again under different circumstances, given the conduct of your police force and your courts?
My initial impression of Malta was very favourable. However I would advise anyone thinking of visiting to beware of the local 'custom' towards visitors suspected of wrongdoing, and suggest that they spend their vacation money elsewhere where such civil injustices do not take place.
