The new squash season gets underway today at the Malta Union Club.

For the first time, several players from prestigious London club HAC - Honourable Artillery Company Squash Club - will also be taking part.

The players from HAC are in Malta for a short break and have decided to take the opportunity to play in the Union Club competition as well as a friendly match at the Marsa Sports Club.

Malta's ladies national team have once again entered both events as they look to step up their preparations for this year's European Small Nations Squash Tournament, to be held at the end of October in Cyprus.

However, the participation of the Maltese teams in this tournament is still in the balance due to financial constraints.

Malta Squash Secretary Liz Said is still hopeful that a sponsor can be found in time to enable both the ladies and men's team to take part in the Cyprus tournament.

Play at the Union Club today begins at 10 a.m. with the finals expected to be played at around 6 p.m.
