The number of Maltese travellers departing by air amounted to 111,554 between January and July, an increase of 5.5 per cent over the same period last year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.
The most popular destination was the UK, which accounted for 23.2 per cent of air travellers. The next most popular were Italy (22.1 per cent), Tunisia (8.7 per cent), Germany (5.8 per cent), France (5.4 per cent), The Netherlands (2.9 per cent) and Spain (1.5 per cent).
The number of Maltese departures by air to the UK increased by 2.2 per cent but the increases were higher to other destinations: Germany (14.4 per cent), Tunisia (26.9 per cent) and The Netherlands (30.5 per cent).
The number going to France declined by 7.8 per cent, Italy by 3.8 per cent and Spain by 31.4 per cent.
In July alone, the number of Maltese departures was 28,711, with 24,454 of them leaving by air - an increase of 9.5 per cent over the same month last year.
