Twenty-nine irregular immigrants were rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta yesterday after Maltese fishermen noticed they were in difficulty.

The police said the group consisted of 21 males, five females and three children and that they hailed from Africa.

The boat was spotted some 70 nautical miles south of the island at around 7 a.m.

The maritime squadron immediately sent a patrol boat to the area.
