Fr Bonaventura M. Camilleri, S.Th.D., affectionately known as iz-Ziju to all who knew him both in Malta and Gozo, passed on to eternal life on Friday. Born in Victoria, Gozo, on November 4, 1914, he joined the Franciscan Conventual Minors Community at 19 years of age, and was ordained on November 5, 1939.
He excelled in his academic studies, obtaining his Licentiate in Theology in 1947. Only two years later, he brilliantly defended his doctoral thesis 'On the Nature of the Church', passing his exams summa cum laude at the Seraphicum in Rome. He taught extensively, both in Malta and his native Gozo, and was Professor of Theology at the Gozo Seminary between 1968 and 1985. Renowned for his exceptional sermons, combining erudition with clarity, he was chosen to deliver, among other significant events, the oration commemorating the centenary of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception to a distinguished audience in 1954 in Valletta. His writings have been published extensively both locally and abroad. He served as examiner on various boards on many occasions.
On the pastoral side, Fr Bonaventura occupied various posts. He was Guardian of St Francis Convent, Birkirkara, where he oversaw the building of the new church. In 1963 he was installed as parish priest of the Franciscan Church in St Paul's Bay, a post he held until 1968. Between 1974 and 1977 he served as Guardian of the Franciscan Convent in Victoria. He also served as secretary and provincial designate for a number of times, treasurer, and also Custodian of the Chapter.
