For the past few months now the low-cost airlines issue has been hotly debated and the majority of the public seem in favour of allowing large low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair, into the country.
The main problem is the taxes which are currently very high compared to any European country. It has been said that if low-cost airlines were allowed to begin operating from Malta, the great increase in tourists will be too big for Malta's infrastructure to endure. I agree, but can't we restructure?
Another problem would arise if many planes began flying to Malta and caused congestion at Malta International Airport. If need be the airport can expand some more, although I have never seen Park 9 completely full. MIA would need a larger workforce to deal with an increase in traffic. The Malta Air Traffic Services might also need to train some new air traffic controllers, and I can say for certain that there are many young men and women ready to take air traffic control as a career, myself being one of them.
Nowadays new airlines are appearing all over the world, even in Malta with BritishJet.com. Around the world the idea of going abroad for the weekend is as easy as going to Gozo, if not cheaper. Low-cost airlines have many defects - but they can give lots of work to our country, and an endless amount of tourists, and since we depend on them for our economy, why not do the obvious and welcome them?
