Croatian Foreign Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic phoned her Maltese counterpart, Foreign Minister Michael Frendo, immediately after Wednesday night's incidents to express her regret at the behaviour of the Croatian football fans during the World Cup qualifying game between Malta and Croatia, Dr Frendo told The Times yesterday.

"We had a very good conversation and Ms Grabar-Kitarovic expressed her regret at the behaviour of the Croatian football supporters," Dr Frendo said. Malta and Croatia have close diplomatic relations and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, along with seven other European leaders, recently wrote to British Prime Minister Tony Blair urging the European Union to immediately open EU accession talks with Croatia.

Reuters news agency also reported that Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader condemned the behaviour of the Croatian fans in Malta.
