Toyota are pushing hard to oust Ferrari from Formula One's top trio of teams after narrowing the gap between them to eight points in Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.

While Ferrari failed to score, Toyota's Italian Jarno Trulli and German Ralf Schumacher finished fifth and sixth respectively.

"We are making ground on Ferrari," said team principal Tsutomu Tomita.

"Now we are only eight points behind with four races left. We are closing on them and we will push hard to catch them and make it into the top three."

Ferrari have won the constructors' championship for the past six years but Renault and McLaren are fighting for the spoils this time.

The Italian team have not finished a season outside the top three since 1993, when they were fourth.

Toyota are enjoying their best season since they entered Formula One in 2002. They were eighth for the last two years and 10th before that.
