I am glad the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage reacted to the criticism about the Mdina paving project and the Marsa flood relief project in connection with archaeological remains (August 25). Things are clearer and look promising.

I would have liked Anthony Pace to reply to my numerous letters in the papers about the Roman remains in San Gwann. My last letter appeared in The Times some three months ago. In it, I deplored the fact that the historical sites in our area are completely neglected if not abandoned altogether.

I mentioned, among others, the threatened destruction of the well-preserved Roman cistern in Triq il-Baruza and the forsaken state of the Punico-Roman tower remains at Ta' Cieda. We cannot wait until irreversible damage is done or some speculators continue to develop the whole area.

The Superintendent accepts the fact that his priority is to protect archaeological remains "in a totally reversible manner and which would offer a cheap and sustainable conservation solution".

I would like to know what he has to say about the Roman cistern and tower remains.
