An Englishman was yesterday given a two-year jail term suspended for four years for seriously injuring a Maltese man in the face when he acted in excessive self defence. Stephen Lilley, 49, pleaded guilty to seriously injuring Mario Curmi in the jaw in St Paul's Bay on Wednesday.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera handed down judgement when she heard the prosecution and the defence agree that Mr Lilley had acted in self defence but had overstepped the limits of self defence. Police Inspector Roland Cassar prosecuted.

Lawyers Stefano Filletti and Tiziana Filletti appeared for Mr Lilley.
