Rain this week is yet another indication that the new rugby season has to be just around the corner.

With the successes of last term under their belts, Stompers RFC have already started training, determined to do even better in 2005-06.

Last season, they won the Ray Elliot Cup, were runners-up in the league and Super Cup, became the first club in Malta to run a second team and maintained their lead role in developing youth rugby.

Positive recognition of Stompers' success came at the MRFU Awards ceremony when club captain Patrick Satariano was named Player of the Year. The Best Youth Player award went to Max Galea.

These accolades were echoed at Stompers' own club awards when Satariano was named best player and young Galea the Club Man of the Season. The award for most improved went to Dragoslav Vesic.

Clivens Frendo was identified as the Best Upcoming Player while Nathan Gatt was the Most Dedicated Youth Player of 2004/05.

Stompers again agreed terms with sponsors TGI Fridays and Carlsberg for the new season.

They are now planning a major recruitment drive to strengthen their coaching base with a direct approach being made to former players who want to put something back into the game.

At the same time, some novel plans are being drawn up to increase the playing membership, for both senior and junior sections.

Anyone interested may attend weekly training sessions at Marsa, every Tuesday and Thursday, at 8 p.m. One may also phone 9944-9172, 9944-9196 or 9926-7926 for more information.
