Several letters have appeared regarding the salaries of consultants and other medical staff in the national health service. Unfortunately, surgeons and physicians are not alone in this ordeal.
Although local diagnostic radiographers qualify with one of the highest standards of education when compared to their European counterparts, their salary does not reflect this. In fact, when compared to their British colleagues working with the NHS, Maltese radiographers earn one-third of their salary.
This and other professional issues have led to the migration of five radiographers in one year, some of whom have vast clinical experience. Many more have applied for foreign registration, an indication that more individuals are planning to leave.
Although the latter may be easily replaced by unemployed graduates, experienced radiographers are hard to find... especially if paid with peanuts.
