I would like to add my comments to the recent correspondence concerning the inequality of cardiac surgeons' salaries.

When my husband's cardiologist approached the cardiac surgical team at St Luke's Hospital, it was considered generally that he was too weak to withstand surgery. However, one surgeon offered to at least examine Joe. Because of his age and diabetic condition, let alone the state of his heart and arteries, Walter Busuttil warned that recovery would be long and painful.

He performed a dual bypass and after Joe was discharged, Mr Busuttil used to stop by our home en route to the hospital each morning to monitor progress. Without a fee I might add.

The battle has been a long one but, 20 months later, my husband is enjoying creating his new garden (rather a quiet life for a yachtsman). However, he owes his life entirely to this surgeon's skill and dedication. God bless Mr Busuttil.
