Artificial reefs - St Julians
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has embarked on an experimental project that attempts to determine the environmental acceptability of creating artificial reefs in Maltese waters, as well as to determine whether there will be any statistically significant difference in the benthic communities and fish species settling on or around the reef.
The project aims to scientifically assess the impact of artificial reefs on the marine environment and the monitoring and quantification of the colonisation of the reefs by marine life, the testing of the effects in using different materials for the construction of the reefs and the potential creation of a diving attraction in the area.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Marine Ecology Research Group of the University of Malta (Department of Biology).
Qala Belvedere
In the small picturesque village of Qala, Mepa financed the upgrading of the surrounding belvedere area. The area boasts magnificent views of the Mgarr harbour and the island of Comino. The works included the upgrading of the street furniture and landscaping works.
This project has been carried out in collaboration with the Qala local council.
