Sixty-four dance students from three schools recently took part in a dance summer school at The Dance Workshop, where they were introduced to new repertoires.

The dancers were tutored daily for a week, in classical ballet, jazz, contemporary, drama and Spanish dance. They were introduced to the repertoire of the big ballets, namely Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.

Another highlight was the daily music session, introducing the younger students to different rhythms in a class conducted by Renzo Spiteri.

The students were tutored by Kate Simmons, a former soloist with the English National Ballet, who coached them in the ballet classes as well as in the repertoire.

Ms Simmons, who trained at the Royal Ballet School, is currently director of Kate Simmons Dance, which is the flagship Cecchetti-based school in the UK.

At the end of the week, Ms Simmons presented awards to students who showed the greatest improvement throughout the course. These were Nicole Kenely, Michaela Fleri-Soler and Tessa Mallia Borg.

Theresa Lungaro-Mifsud, Tanya Bayona and Deborah McNamara completed the classical ballet faculty, while Claire Cassola, Francesca Abela and Pamela Kerr covered other dance subjects.

Malcolm Galea was a guest teacher in the drama classes.
