Road safety

I am really concerned about the lack of emphasis made in The Times with regard to road safety. I am 49 years old with three children and three grandchildren who would love to see their granddad and father grow old in relative safety.

I can recall at least five instances when I have tried to cross the road on zebra crossings and have had to leap for my life because some idiot might get home five seconds late and is unable to use his brakes.

I would love to see a police officer spend the evening in my street and just watch all the next world champion racing drivers that use it like a drag strip. The police force would do a better job if they spent more time on the road stopping cars with no brake lights, defective tyres etc.

I read very, very few articles with regard to traffic issues and am surprised that no one seems to take the argument further. I am sure that if you asked any visitors to the islands about the standard of driving here they would give some insight into the reasons why they don't hire cars and why they don't envisage coming back here.
