The investigation into the cause of the massive explosion at a fireworks factory in Gharb, Gozo, early on Friday morning, is still ongoing.

Ta' Farrugia fireworks factory was flattened after an explosion destroyed eight of its 10 rooms. No-one was injured in the blast.

Fire engines rushed to Birbuba Street to control the blaze. Police and explosives experts then began their investigations.

The explosion was so powerful it shattered window panes of homes 30 minutes away, sending shivers down residents' spines. The explosion was reportedly heard in several parts of Malta.

It is believed that fireworks for the Zebbug and Ghajnsielem feasts, which will be celebrated in the coming days, were being stored at the factory.
