BirdLife Malta has welcomed the recent scheduling of the landward side of Ta' Cenc cliffs in Gozo.

But the environmental NGO also voiced its regret that a large part of the natural habitat at Ta' Cenc still lacked adequate protection. This, it said, was an area of high ecological value and merited the highest level of protection.

BirdLife also called on the government to add Ta' Cenc to the list of proposed Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) to be included in the Natura 2000 network under the EU Habitats Directive.

A list of SACs is submitted by each member state to the EU Commission and after examining the site's inventory of fauna and flora, the Commission decides whether the site qualifies as a Natura 2000 site.
