Signs abound of a growing polarisation in the Maltese Church, although to a lesser extent than in other countries, according to the editorial of the latest issue of Orbis, a quarterly magazine published by the Maltese Jesuits.
At the same time, the Diocesan Synod has chosen communion as the principal value for the Maltese Church for the coming years.
The summer issue of Orbis is dedicated to the Church, both in Malta and abroad.
Fr Mario Farrugia, professor of theology at the Gregorian University, looks at the way Vatican II spoke about the Church. The new Pope, in his first address to the Cardinals, stated that he witnessed a Church full of courage, a freer and younger Church. He insisted on the importance of considering the Council to be the compass that indicates the road the Church must undertake in the third millennium.
Rev. Professor Maurice Eminyan contributes an article about Pope John Paul II and Mario Vassallo's regular contribution in this issue deals with the effects of Malta's accession to the European Union. Another article by Christine Borg outlines "The Politics of Breastfeeding" and one can also read the opening contribution delivered at a seminar on racism organised earlier on this year by the Centre for Faith and Justice.
