Embellishment of Mosta square 'long overdue'

Acting Labour leader Charles Mangion yesterday lambasted the Mosta council for dragging its feet on what he termed the "long overdue" embellishment project of the village square.

Addressing the media in front of the Mosta church, Dr Mangion said the Nationalist Party had promised to embellish the pjazza. It had drawn up plans and held endless meetings but never brought the project to completion, both on a government and at local council level.

"Mosta residents have been promised for the past 12 years that the square would be embellished," Dr Mangion said.

He said that in August 1998, when the Labour government started works, Nationalist MPs and Mosta's Nationalist mayor Joe de Martino had opposed and stopped it through a judicial application.

Dr Mangion said the local council, which finally decided to carry out the works, had promised that the project would be ready by last June. The mayor, however, was not in a position to say when the work would be completed, he added.
