Maurice Agius, founder member of Union Haddiema Maghqudin, was laid to rest yesterday.

Mr Agius, who passed away on Saturday aged 73, was the UHM's first general secretary when the union was set up in 1966. At the time the union was known as the Malta Government Employees Union.

He held the post of general secretary until 1998, when the union's general conference appointed him permanent honorary president.

The funeral Mass was held at St Lawrence's church in Vittoriosa. Among the mourners were Acting President George Hyzler, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, MPs and trade unionists, including UHM general secretary Gejtu Vella and the general secretary of the General Worker's Union Tony Zarb.
