The need for an office or department within the Foreign Affairs Ministry responsible for issues involving Maltese communities around the world was underlined by Opposition Leader Alfred Sant who is presently in Australia, the Labour Party said yesterday.
In an interview with journalist Lawrence Dimech, Dr Sant said there was good potential for business and investment between the two countries and this needed to be encouraged.
A Labour government would keep its eyes open to support those who have the ability and interest to improve business between Malta and Australia.
Dr Sant said the MLP supported attempts to strengthen Maltese culture among Maltese communities.
He agreed with a request that people of Maltese descent living in Australia would have the same rights as those coming from EU countries.
He stressed the importance of promoting the diplomatic, consular and cultural presence of the Maltese government in Australia.
The Labour deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, Charles Mangion, is Acting Leader in Dr Sant's absence.
