Gay rights movement meets MEPs

Two meetings between four Maltese MEPs and the Malta Gay Rights Movement were termed by the movement as a bridge-building exercise.

The movement said it discussed further cooperation on issues related to human rights with Labour MEPs Joseph Muscat and Louis Grech.

When it met Nationalist MEPs Simon Busuttil and David Casa, the movement said it expressed its concern over their stand regarding the Buttiglione affair (Rocco Buttiglione's nomination as member of the new European Commission had to be withdrawn after statements he made about gays) and their recent vote against the Moraes Report on the protection of minorities and anti-discrimination policies in an enlarged Europe.

The movement also probed the possibility of establishing better communications between the PN and the gay lobby.

Labour MEP John Attard Montalto said he would meet the movement's representatives in the coming weeks.
