Education is the best way to control and eliminate cruelty to animals, the Education Division's student services and international relations director Mary Rose Mifsud said yesterday.

Speaking during a visit to the Francis Ebejer summer school in Zurrieq, Ms Mifsud said love for animals showed how developed a country was, while cruelty to animals signified a lack of respect for life's values.

As part of the government's annual summer school programme, the first Friday of August was dedicated to the protection of animals. The day included a number of activities to raise awareness about animal protection and to urge students to shoulder the responsibility of their pets.

The activities of Skolasajf include drama, literature, poetry, music, exhibitions and presentations by the students.

Ms Mifsud also visited a session of Klabbsajf, a specialised programme within the summer school targeted at students who need complementary education during the scholastic year.
