The Marine Rescue Unit of Nature Trust Malta located the carcass of a Risso dolphin in a very advanced state of decomposition. The dolphin carcass (picture) was found floating near the bocci club in Birzebbuga.
The unit had responded to a report by the Birzebbuga police about the dolphin.
Nature Trust said the carcass was probably that of an adult dolphin because it already had four teeth on each side of the lower jaw. Most of the carcass including the mouth was infested with barnacles.
The Marine Rescue Unit is a 24-hour service run by volunteers, among them biologists and veterinarians, who rescue injured dolphins and turtles.
This service saves the lives of at least three dolphins and a dozen turtles per year, Nature Trust said.
NT is raising funds to establish a marine wildlife clinic.
