Double the bill

I have just received notification from the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) that my driving licence was about to expire and to send Lm2 if I wanted it renewed for another year. The catch was in the next sentence. I had to add another Lm2.50 as administration fee!

ADT has found a cunning way in which to increase the final bill by more than 100 per cent without actually increasing the licence fee itself. I dread the day when government departments and other authorities wake up to this novel way of increasing their revenue and start adding administration fees to their bills.

Just imagine the joy of receiving a bill from the Inland Revenue or the Water Services Department for money due plus a hefty charge as administration fee.
