The Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) recently held a prize-giving ceremony at the Razzett tal-Hbiberija, the friendship park at Marsascala.

Kevin Buttigieg, the newly-elected MRFU president, and ex-president Adrian Wirth addressed the gathering, encouraging club delegates, players and supporters for the tests to come next season.

Wirth thanked the council for the work they had accomplished during his term in office.

Buttigieg exhorted members to face the huge amount of work and great opportunities involved in continuing the progress of Maltese rugby with confidence and strength.

They encouraged national coach and Director of Rugby Damien Neill in his wide-ranging long-term plans for the local game.

Kavallieri were by far the most successful club last season, scooping three out of the four trophies, clearly the famous "Kavallieri Spirit" driving them to success.

Until another club can find similar motivation and dedication they could well dominate the local scene for some years to come.

The season was a triumph for Kavallieri coach Richard Beerman who has managed to control and motivate some turbulent characters with skill and patience, resulting in a fine rugby machine.

The prize-giving event was the second time that the MRFU and Razzett tal-Hbiberija have co-operated in mutual support after the Kilimanjaro Trekkers collected funds for charity at the successful international vs Denmark at the Hibs Ground. They sent their drummers to beat in support of the Malta team.

Kavallieri AGM

Kavallieri RFC have just held their 12th annual general meeting which was held at the Le Meridien Phoenicia. Those present were addressed by Pierre Mangion, president, Ishmael Borg, secretary, and Reuben Vella, treasurer, all three re-elected for another term.

Also elected in the new committee were Brian Miller and Colette Abela, vice-president and PRO.

Audrey Vella is the women's team representative.

During the last seven years, the club has grown consistently both in membership and in terms of playing and administrative experience.

The meeting also marked the official induction of the Kavallieri women's team. The majority of Kavallieri Ladies have made history when participating in two overseas tournaments, Tunisia, February 2004, and Czech Republic, March 2005.

The main issues on the agenda were the development of players and coaches and enhancing the club's image through different sponsorships.
