In the coming weeks the Malta Labour Party is to start drawing up a development plan for Gozo that will cover the island's economy, social sector, health, the environment and the island's cultural growth, party leader Alfred Sant said.

He told a social gathering at Mgarr that the past year had been tough for Gozo, which had to face a stagnated economy and job losses.

The government was not interested in Gozo's economic revival but Gozitans should not be disheartened because there was ample space for improving on the talents and initiatives that had remained alive in Gozo.

What was lacking was a clear vision for the island. Dr Sant said that his party believed that manufacturing industry could re-establish itself in Gozo through the setting up new factories that would provide jobs.

While the economic situation in Gozo seemed to improve slightly in the past weeks, as a result of summer business, he was still hearing Gozitan hoteliers and businessmen express concern at the state of affairs.

Dr Sant expressed the hope that all those who had the future of Gozo at heart would contribute in the drawing up of this plan to ensure the island's development.
