I have been giving or, rather, trying to give talks to consumers on consumer affairs at local council offices on behalf of the Consumer and Competition Division since the end of June. I use the word "trying" because that is all we can do.
Basically, the attendance is abysmally poor. Indeed in most cases (about 95 per cent) no consumers attended. In the few cases in which we had some attendance, on three occasions we had one consumer and on two occasions we had two consumers.
Indeed some consumers join the Consumers' Association just to have a complaint dealt with accordingly. A year later when the membership is due for renewal they do not renew their membership "because I do not have a complaint".
However, I will not give up in my efforts to keep consumers informed. In September I will be giving talks at local council offices as follows:
