Two planes which were due to land in Malta yesterday morning were diverted to Catania because visibility on the island was very low, a spokesman for Malta International Airport said.

The low visibility was due to fog which shrouded Malta yesterday morning. Kenneth Chase, the officer on duty at the Meteorological Office at the MIA, confirmed that there was a lot of fog, adding that visibility early yesterday morning was only of 50 metres. Visibility on a good day is more than 10 kilometres.

Mr Chase said the Met Office takes fog observations every half an hour. Visibility was low at 6.45 a.m. and 7.15 a.m.
