A total of 12.5 million kilogrammes of fruit and vegetables went to vegetable markets during the second quarter of this year, the National Statistics Office said.

This represents an increase of 0.2 million kilogrammes (+1.7 per cent) over the same period last year.

The NSO said that while the increase in the availability of fresh fruit and vegetables was minimal, its wholesale value increased by Lm0.4 million (+24.6 per cent) to reach Lm2.2 million.

During the first six months of 2005, the total supply of fresh fruit and vegetables passing through the markets rose by 0.4 million kilogrammes (+1.9 per cent) over the same period last year, to 20.2 million kilogrammes.

This produce netted an increase of Lm0.2 million (+6.3 per cent) to reach Lm4 million.

The "all items" fresh vegetables price index for June stood at 73.39 points, 19.4 points (+36 per cent) higher than in the same month last year.
