Alternattiva Demokratika has called on the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to give the thumbs down to the demolition of one the oldest buildings in Sliema.

"If Mepa allows this building to be lost, then one of Sliema's last remaining examples of architectural heritage will be obliterated to be replaced by more drab apartments," AD's Mark Causon said.

AD has filed an objection with Mepa over the development application.

AD's Sliema local councillor Michael Briguglio said the local council has voted to formally object to the demolition of the house.

"The Sliema local council shall be informing Mepa of its objection to the demolition of an existing building at Ghar il-Lembi Street and its replacement by apartments. This townhouse was constructed in the 18th century and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sliema. An outline permit has been issued for the proposed development," Mr Briguglio said.

According to AD, the building lies within the Sliema Urban Conservation Area which means that the building should be protected.

"Malta's leading authority on cultural heritage, namely the Superintendent for Cultural Heritage, is also objecting to the demolition of the building. Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and Sliema residents have also expressed their opposition to the development," Mr Briguglio said.
