Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson made an immediate impact for VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, scoring the winning penalty in a 4-3 shoot-out victory over Hertha Berlin in the pre-season League Cup.
Tomasson, signed from Milan earlier this month as a replacement for Schalke 04 recruit Kevin Kuranyi, came on after an hour to make his debut in the second of two quarter-finals played in Duesseldorf.
He missed a good chance to break the deadlock in the 69th minute. But after the match had finished goalless in 90 minutes the Dane stepped up to give new coach Giovanni Trapattoni victory in his first competitive match in charge. Stuttgart now face Bayern Munich, one of Trapattoni's former clubs, in their semi-final tomorrow.
Werder Bremen edged Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the other quarter-final.
Bremen will face last season's Bundesliga runners-up Schalke in their semi-final on Wednesday.
Bayern and Schalke were handed byes into the last four in Germany's traditional pre-season tournament which features the top six finishers in the league last season.
The final takes place in Leipzig on August 2.
