Joseph Micallef has been appointed permanent secretary-designate in the Ministry for Gozo.
He will take up his appointment on October 16 on the retirement of the present incumbent, Frank Psaila.
Mr Micallef joined the public service in 1966 as a postman and following his appointment as clerk in 1976 was posted to the Department of Labour and Emigration. Between 1991 and 1993 he served as administrative officer in the Social and Family Welfare Department.
Mr Micallef also served at the Ministry for Home Affairs and Social Development and with the Lija council and since 1995 in the Ministry for Tourism. He was appointed director, tourism in 1999 and recently became director (resourcing - public sector) in the Management and Personnel Office in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Mr Micallef held various senior roles in the Union Haddiema Maghqudin including vice-president of the general service section in 1991, with a reappointment in 1995. He was also secretary to the National Employment Authority and to the Hotels and Catering Establishments Board and a member of the EFL Schools Monitoring Board.
