Sprinter Mallia in fine form for Pembroke

Chouhal secures double in jumps

More emphatic victories in the men's and women's 2005 Clubs League events last week, saw Pembroke Athleta consolidating their position at top of the provisional standings with only one day to go.

The Pembroke women's team hit top form to secure most of the honours of Day Two. Their male counterparts won less events but one Pembroke member who shone above all others was 18-year-old sprinter Jean Andre Mallia.

Not only did he win the 100m race in a personal best time of 10.87 seconds (his third PB in the space of six weeks), but Mallia also went on to finish first in the 400m besides forming part of the Pembroke relay team that won the 4x100m race.

Rachid Chouhal, sporting the colours of Zurrieq Wolves, won both the long jump and triple jump, while Isaias Tesfay (Savio) won the 800m and 5,000m races.

Another athlete to catch the eye was La Salle's Mario Bonello.

Despite being beaten by Mallia in the 100m, he managed to shake off the challenge of valid sprinters in the calibre of Darren Gilford, Nikolai Portelli and Karl Farrugia to win the 200m in 22.07 seconds.

In women's competitions, Carol Galea, of Pembroke, pulled off an impressive double by winning both the 1,500m and the 5,000m races.

Day Three of the Clubs League will be held tomorrow at Marsa.
