We hurt your intelligence

A regular correspondent of this newspaper - and a very intelligent one we must admit - who has for decades championed nothing but lost causes, remarked that what we wrote about the Constitution in one of our June issues insults readers' intelligence.

We bow our heads in repentance and humbly ask forgiveness. For 40 years our movement has done nothing but argue in favour of European unity - consistently. For others consistency means being the voice box of lost causes.

But they do not mind. Not even when they quote from such acclaimed authorities as Bild Zeitung (comparable to Britain's The Sun, famous for its page 3 bulges).

Turning to serious matters, was it not noteworthy, to say the least, that in the run-up to the MLP general conference, and during the conference itself, speaker after speaker took the stand to repeat the same arguments and punchlines which we have argued for 40 years?

But up to two years ago all kind of abuse was thrown at us for saying the same things. Yesterday's lies seem to have turned into today's truths.

We understand that there are people out there who are angry and we can't blame them. But they need to turn their anger on those who have been messing about with them, moulding them, turning them upside down, leading them here and there... oops, we really have to say this... taking them for a ride all these years.

We do not know how an ass feels after being ridden hither and thither by an impassionate rider. We can imagine that the jockey must have enjoyed the marauding more than the ass, which is obviously tired and demoralised.

Time for it to roll on its back, kick up the dust and disturb the hay... take a break.
