Liverpool have completed the signing of midfielder Mohamed Lamine Sissoko from Valencia.
Sissoko, a 20-year-old Mali international who was born in France, joined his new team-mates in time for a pre-season training camp in Switzerland.
No details were given of the deal, although media reports put the transfer fee at five million pounds.
Manager Rafael Benitez, who coached Sissoko before leaving Valencia for Liverpool last year, said: "Over this season we might play 60 games and so all the players will get a chance.
"Normally we will start with Gerrard and Alonso, but if we play two games in a week then Sissoko can play. He is a young boy with the energy we need in midfield. He is a strong player, a good worker and has a great attitude."
Sissoko, who joined Valencia from Auxerre in 2003, underlined Benitez as the main reason for moving to Anfield.
"He showed last season with Liverpool what a great manager he is and I want to be a part of this club's future," he said.
"I know all about the history and tradition of the club and I am honoured to be here."
Sissoko could make his debut in tomorrow's friendly in Austria against Bayer Leverkusen.
