1961 report mentions Inglott's name
Tonio Farrugia, of Bugibba, writes:
First of all I would like to thank and congratulate your correspondent and my friend Carmel Baldacchino who, through the years, has awarded us with precious information regarding the history of the local game.
Like Baldacchino, for ages I studied well the history of the Maltese football and came across a lot of interesting information which to date is still unknown.
In last week's Shadows from the Past, Baldacchino wrote about C. Inglott and wondered whether this player's name might be Carmelo Inglott. In fact it is so.
Obviously, such information should be accompanied with the source where the information came from and, in fact, I always keep track of the information I managed to acquire through the years.
The information which settles Baldacchino's question is to be found on It-Torca of March 19, 1961. In this issue there is a reference to the match for the Atkins Cup between Floriana and Sliema played on January 28, 1923.
Inglott played in that match and in the article he is named as Karmnu Inglott. For the record, Sliema won the cup 1-0 with a goal by Frankie Busuttil, one of four brothers to play for Sliema in that era.
I would also like to add another piece of information which would interest readers as such data was marked with a question mark in Baldacchino's book 'Maltese Footballers - Hundred of the Best'.
Gejtu Psaila died in March 1968. His death was documented in The Maltese Observer of March 24, 1968.
Salvu Troisi passed away at his residence in Birkirkara on August 9, 1946 at the age of 51. His death is recorded on both The Times and Il-Berqa of a few days later. Censu Friggieri died in Sydney, Australia, on March 1, 1974. His death is reported in The Times of March 6, 1974.
All three were rightly chosen by Baldacchino among the best 100 local footballers.
Friggieri dynasty
And since mentioning one of the Friggieris, I would like to pass on this interesting information regarding the Friggieri dynasty.
The first were brothers Fredu and Ruggieru in the early days of local football. Ruggieru had two sons who both turned out to be the great footballers - Censu and Pawlu.
Fredu had a son, another Censu, who played in goal for Tigers FC of Floriana in the 20s when they dominated the Amateur League.
Ruggieru and Fredu had a sister. She had two sons who turned out to be the renowned Baskal and Nenu Scicluna of Floriana FC.
And the story goes on till this day with Ian Azzopardi, of Floriana FC and Malta. His grandfather is Pawlu Friggieri and his great grandfather is Ruggieru Friggieri 'Iz-Zibga'.
