Diane Borg yesterday became Malta's youngest record holder for the 100m race when sprinting home in Morocco's IVth IAAF World Youth Championships heats in 12.11 seconds.

The 14-year-old Starmax AC speedster failed to reach the finals of the event but her time was good enough to beat the previous national mark of 12.16 which had stood since May 2001 and belonged to Deirdre Farrugia.

In Marrakech, Borg finished 35th overall from 87 starters in the 100m race. She was fourth in her heat and classified fourth in the 1990-born class. Her previous personal best for the sprint distance was 12.31 seconds.

Borg, twice a silver medallist for Malta in the Andorra GSSE with second-place finishes in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, will again be in action in Morocco on Saturday for the 200m race. She returns home on Monday.
