First it was the blackboard. Now even the whiteboard has gone out of date. The Maria Regina Girls' Junior Lyceum is taking advantage of new computer technology with the introduction of five "interactive" whiteboards that were launched during a teachers' in-service course on Monday.

The Department of Technology in Education, Secondary Section, had encouraged such initiatives to be taken in secondary schools during a meeting for heads of school last January.

The teaching staff at Maria Regina had explored the possibility of using information communication technology across the curriculum and had requested formal training to develop their ICT skills and teaching methodologies.

More than 100 teachers were trained in the use of computer labs during a hands-on course to explore how ICT can be used to facilitate learning in all subjects. The course dealt with a broad range of issues from basic concepts to web-page design and slide-show presentations.

The outgoing permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education, Charles Mizzi, visited the school with Lawrence Zammit, director technology in education and Charles Galea, education officer for computer studies.

Frans Borg, the new permanent secretary, later visited the school and praised the initiative, saying it was in line with the new way forward in teaching.
