Alternattiva Demokratika environment spokesman Mark Causon has praised the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for rejecting the application for a new quarry in Wied Moqbol, on the outskirts of Zurrieq.
This quarry was due to replace another quarry owned by the same person next to Hagar Qim, which was closed down at the end of December 1994 after the ancient temple was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Wied Moqbol has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation of International Importance under the EU's Natura 2000 programme in view of the importance of the species as well as archaeological remains found there.
Mr Causon said that a quarry in such an area would have risked polluting the ground water.
