It is truly sad to see the once fiercely independent people of Malta sacrificing so much of what they strived for. By unanimously voting to ratify the EU Constitution, the Nationalist government and the now docile Labour opposition have given their consent to the death of the Maltese Constitution. It is sadder still to see the opinions of the Maltese people, having not been allowed their say via a referendum, being ignored.

The people voted narrowly in favour of joining the EU and the government has abused that vote with regard to the EU Constitution. When the people of Malta voted in favour of joining the EU, it was a vote based on rhetoric, spin and manipulation. Although they are still in a peculiar period of delusion, where they still believe sacrificing their sovereignty to the EU is beneficial to them, I would not doubt that many are awakening to the fact that there are many problems - and costs - that come hand in hand with membership. There is no doubt that given the chance they might have voted against the EU Constitution, especially when they realise it overrides and invalidates their own Constitution.

The vote taken in the Maltese Parliament to ratify the EU Constitution, even though this is technically defunct, is part of learning that once you vote in favour of any EU project, you will never be given the opportunity to change your mind - that option only comes when you vote against the EU and its mad schemes to create a single country called Europe.
