The new fines on litter-bugs have met with approval from all those who would like to see our beloved islands free of all sorts of rubbish.
Litter-bugs, including those who are in the habit of flicking cigarette butts wherever they happen to be, have now to be extra careful because, if caught, the same hand which flicked the butt will have to fork out a hefty fine.
It was about time that something in this direction was done, tackled in a serious way and enforced.
There is no reason whatsoever why our streets and countryside are littered with garbage ranging from plastic bags to mattresses, geysers, furniture and what not.
The local councils fork out thousands of liri to have our garbage collected daily from in front of our doors and they can also boast of an efficient, free and prompt bulky service collection. However, there are those who persist in creating a small Maghtab in certain areas. Not to mention others who take out their garbage on a Saturday for collection the following Monday, offering a weekend feast to stray cats and dogs.
Let us now hope that those who think themselves above the law are caught and booked. Perhaps in this way they will stop committing this egoistic crime towards society.
The environment belongs to us all and as such we are entitled to live in clean surroundings.
